Aqil Haziq Mahmud reports on Malaysian politics, the environment, defence and security.

Haziq joined CNA Digital in 2017, reporting on the Singapore Armed Forces and its military exercises in Australia and the United States. He was also deployed to New Zealand in 2019 to cover the Christchurch mosque shootings.

In 2022, he was tasked to cover Malaysia issues. His first assignment was to report on the country’s 15th general election. He previously reported on Malaysia’s struggles as a plastic waste importer and how its fish farms influenced prices abroad.

Haziq has a communications degree from Nanyang Technological University and was previously news editor of its campus newspaper.
